Goat Corrals

“High tech” goat corral made from planks in eastern section of Niassa Reserve where there is access to planks, nails and corrugated iron. Traditional effective corral, using local poles and no commercial materials. This design is effective when there is a log roof.
Ineffective corral built to keep goats in not to keep carnivores out. Ineffective goat corral which was built inside a bamboo fence around the living quarters, offering some protection.

Goat husbandry is a fairly recent development in Niassa, and many villagers don’t yet have strategies for keeping their herds safe from carnivores. For villagers, goats not only represent a source of protein but they are also a symbol of wealth and a savings account. The loss of one goat to a leopard has significant effect on a household. Well-designed goat corrals are an extremely effective way to protect goats from predation by lions, leopards, and spotted hyaenas.

We assist any farmer who wishes to improve an existing goat corral or build a new one. We will provide transport of building materials and advice, while labour and materials are provided by the goat owner. We will only assist with goat corrals built for at least 10 goats to encourage owners to save trees by jointly building corrals.
